ALTERNATIVAS E PROPOSIÇÕES PARA UMA EXPERIMENTAÇÃO SONORA NA ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA PORTUGUESA PÓS 25 DE ABRIL
Artes Musicais (Sound Art) Master Degree
2011 > 2013
Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa
You can now consult the internet optimized version of my Master’s Degree investigation project (here) or (here). Unfortunately it is only available in portuguese language (I’ve included an english version of the abstract so you can have a basic idea).
On the chapter II.5. (A herança – CTU TELECTU) I’ve made the following reference to a E. M. de Melo e Castro phonograph record:
Later investigations lead me to that phonograph record (listen here).

ABSTRACT:
KEYWORDS: art, sound, technology, experimentalism, Alternativa Zero, Ernesto de Sousa, E. M. de Melo e Castro
This proposal is the result of a investigation considering the artistic actions that took place in Portugal during the decades of 1960s and 1970s. Given that this work is developed from the perspective of a visual artist, it gives the state of the Portuguese contemporary art and of the references that opened the conceptual experimentation including the sound art. The use of new electronic and digital technologies is pointed, as well as for the interaction of the different creative areas. Throughout these three chapters, some of the issues related to the main subject are addressed, such as the use of the computer as a resource and creative tool, the 1977 Alternativa Zero exhibition, the interdisciplinary work of Ernesto de Sousa, and the particular case of E. M. de Melo e Castro with his conceptual, practical and editorial proposals.

Portugal Tropical
This new work in progress collects phonograph records of artists from portuguese speaking countries. To collect and to make available the original songs as well as the graphic work is part of an investigation that will be brought up to date regularly. No matter the origin of the phonograph the objective is to gather in the same place this cultural heritage. From Portugal to Africa, passing through South America and Asia this is a voyage among the tides of sound, melody and rhythm. It’s an adventure promising a lot of tropical warm discoveries.
Portugal Tropical is about portuguese language and “exotic” rhythms.

“This linguistic processing circuit acts as a ‘feed-back’ in which people inoculates in
him self the energy of language transformation. This is one way in which the spoken language is
kept alive by modifying phonetic and syntactically so as to adapt more
conveniently communication needs of the user.”

‘I need nothing’ is an original concept from Cãoceito + Burdman, shot by Moopie. Its premier happens as a tangential project of EXD’11.
‘Useless’ – the motto of biennial’s current edition – was the kick-off, and the thought on how album covers (vinyls, in this case) enable people to ‘listen with the eyes’ the main goal of the project. At a time where digital audio files dominate but where traditional mediums still seduce fans, the album covers, being useless for some, stay relevant for others.
